REDD MEETS: Katie Earl, Creative Director at HBA Residential to discuss her journey into Design

In the wake of recently working together on a REDD project, we got the opportunity to meet Katie, Creative Director at HBA Residential who shared her journey, creative inspirations, and innovative design philosophies that shaped some of the most exquisite residential spaces globally.

● Katie, you’ve wanted to be an interior designer since you were 12, what was it about the world of design at this young age, and even now that inspires your career?

Ever since I was young, I’ve been fascinated by how spaces can transform the way people feel and interact. I remember rearranging my bedroom countless times to create different environments. The ability to blend colours, textures, and shapes to evoke emotions and tell a story still inspires me today. I’m inspired by the endless possibilities of design to shape lives.

● You’re known for working across disciplines - residential, hospitality, commercial and marine - where do you begin when you start to plan your designs and draw inspiration, what’s your approach?

When I start planning a design, I always begin with a deep dive into the client's vision and the purpose. It is crucial to create an environment that feels inspiring as well as comfortable. I draw inspiration directly from the client and their needs, the environment, the building and context, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. My approach involves a lot of research, brainstorming, and sketching, ensuring each element serves a meaningful purpose.

● How do you integrate more sustainable sourcing and procurement practices in your designs, do you find this is something clients are keen to adopt, or something that is inherent in your design process?

Incorporating sustainable practices is fundamental to my approach. I carefully select materials and partners that align with ethical standards. Many clients are increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability and are enthusiastic about integrating these practices. Even when it’s not their initial focus, I find that clients are receptive to sustainable options when they understand the positive impact on both the environment and the quality of the design.

● You have worked for some of the largest estates and developers in London, what do you think makes London and the world of interior design so internationally recognised and celebrated?

London is a melting pot of cultures, histories, and styles, which makes its design scene incredibly diverse and innovative. The city is home to a mix of traditional and contemporary architecture, and this blend influences interior design in unique ways. Something that is true to both my education in design and my heart as a designer. London's ability to integrate classic elegance with modernity creates spaces that are both timeless and cutting-edge, making it internationally celebrated.

● What areas of design are you being drawn towards at the moment?

Design that transcends trends is the real priority for me, but it's easy to see why biophilic design is popular, as people increasingly desire the tranquillity and connection to nature that outdoor spaces provide. Another aesthetic that I’ve always loved is the blending of vintage and contemporary styles, bringing together nostalgic charm and modern form to create enduring, personalised spaces.

● What is your favourite room to design and why?

The bedroom is my favourite room to design. For me, it is always a personal sanctuary where one can retreat and unwind, so creating a serene and comfortable atmosphere is key. I enjoy selecting calming colour palettes and thoughtful lighting to enhance relaxation. The bedroom provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the client’s personality and create an intimate space that reflects the private personality of the client and transcends everyday life.

● What are you currently working on at HBA?

Amongst other confidential projects, I'm leading the design of a ground-breaking new-build mansion on a coveted corner plot of St. John’s Wood’s Avenue Road, The Whiteley’s next upcoming show residence launching in September and a $70 million penthouse at 111 West 57th Street in New York.

● Avenue Road aside, where you’re working with REDD, what’s your favourite type of project and why? For example, if it’s a new-build skyscraper, why or if commercial - retail or hospitality?

My favourite type of project is working on historic London buildings. There’s something incredibly rewarding about breathing new life into these iconic structures, restoring them to their former glory while infusing them with contemporary glamour. The process of respecting and preserving the heritage of the building, while integrating modern design elements, creates a unique blend of old and new.

Quick fire:

● Favourite destination to source antiques?

I would hold out for PAD in Mayfair’s Berkeley Square exhibition and browse all the absolute pinnacle of antiques and future classics in design.

● Colourful or neutral colour palette?

Both! I tend to use a neutral colour palette as a base because it provides a timeless, versatile canvas that can be easily layered with accessories and artwork. But I often throw bold colours in desaturated tones into our projects so that the properties never feel bland or without personality. Neutral designs are often the hardest to design well!

● Best restaurant interiors in London?

I love going to Maison François. It’s a warm, inviting environment with a touch of glamour.
After I would dip into the bar upstairs above Langan’s recently refurbished restaurant. The dramatic red mustard yellow combo is amazing!
