Created by REDD behind a magnificent Italianate style stucco façade, an elegant new three bedroom duplex penthouse at Six Charles Street in Mayfair, providing 2,027 sq.ft. (188.3 sq.m.) of internal living space with a private 246 sq.ft. (22.9 sq.m.) rooftop garden terrace, located on the site of renowned English potter Josiah Wedgwood’s London showroom and pied-a-terre, is now for sale via sole selling agents Beauchamp Estates, Clifton Property Partners and UK Sotheby’s International Realty.

The new Mayfair penthouse is part of a recently launched boutique residential development at Six Charles Street by REDD with an architectural masterplan by award-winning architectural practice MSMR architects and specification by leading design studio 1508 London. The penthouse, on the fourth and top fifth floors of Six Charles Street, offers all the layout benefits of a house. The entertaining and living spaces are on the upper floor with the more private bedroom suites on the lower.

From the entrance hallway on the lower level a sleek curved staircase leads to the upper floor which has a dual aspect double reception room providing space for a living room, 8-seat dining area and a cocktail bar. French doors from the living room open onto a spacious outside garden terrace.

Adjoining the reception room is a separate bespoke design family kitchen and breakfast room with Gaggenau and Miele appliances and ample space for breakfast/informal dining.

On the lower floor are the three luxurious ensuite bedrooms. The principal bedroom suite has a walk-in dressing room and ensuite bathroom and there are two further bedrooms, both ensuite, with the bedrooms lined with built in wardrobes and with space for dressing and relaxation.

The grand building at Six Charles Street has an illustrious history. The original Georgian townhouse was built in 1750 and in 1765 became the Mayfair showroom, warehouse and pied-a-terre of acclaimed English potter Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795). Wedgwood had established his famous Wedgwood pottery company in 1759 and in the early 1760s leased a property in Grosvenor Square to act as his London showroom and pied-a-terre/office but quickly outgrew the premises.

In 1765 Wedgwood acquired Six Charles Street with the ground and first floors providing display rooms for his magnificent pottery lines, with the upper floors serving as a warehouse and the top floor (now the site of the new penthouse) occupied by Wedgwood’s Mayfair pied-a-terre/office.

Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, made famous by actress Golda Rosheuvel and the Netflix Bridgerton miniseries, was Wedgwood’s loyal Royal patron. The Queen frequently ordered Wedgwood pieces from the Six Charles Street showroom and allowed Wedgwood to name a line of pottery she had purchased  ‘Queen’s Ware’. The Queen also authorised Wedgwood to display the Royal Warrant on company stationery and marketing.

Other patrons of Six Charles Street included Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, (portrayed in 2008 by Keira Knightley in The Duchess) and so successful was the Royal and aristocratic endorsement of his Mayfair showroom that in 1767 Wedgwood wrote: “The demand for cream and ivory coloured ‘Queen’s Ware’ still increases, it is amazing how rapidly the use of it has spread almost over the whole globe.”

In 1773 Russian Envoy-Ambassador Aleksey Musin-Pushkin visited the Wedgwood showroom on behalf of Empress Catherine the Great (characterised by Helen Mirren in the 2019 Sky-HBO miniseries). The Empress ordered the Imperial Green Service from Wedgwood consisting of 952 pieces, produced in Wedgwood’s factory-studio in Chelsea, and now displayed in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersberg.

In 1795 Wedgwood died and in the 1849 the building at Six Charles Street was remodelled to keep up with Victorian fashions, with more opulent interiors and the grand Italianate white stucco facade created. It then served as the Mayfair mansion of art critic John Ruskin where he entertained Thomas Carlyle and Lewis Carroll, before being converted into a collection of grand apartments after World War One.

Now the mansion building has been remodelled and modernised again behind the retained Italianate façade by REDD Real Estate. It now provides a collection of luxurious new apartments, complete with a passenger lift to all floors and a ground floor entrance foyer with a double-height ceiling and concierge.

Recently completed and available for immediate occupation, the new penthouse has been finished to a luxurious specification with marble flooring to the entrance hallway and Havwoods European oak flooring in Herringbone design to the reception room and family kitchen and oak plank format flooring to the bedroom suites.

The principal living spaces have comfort cooling, traditional plaster mouldings and elegant cornice details. The fully fitted designer kitchen has stone worktops, built in cupboards and cabinets and marble tiles to the splashbacks and walls.

The bedroom suites have custom joinery and luxurious ensuites with marble showers, heated towel rails and underfloor heating. The main bathroom to the principal bedroom suite features beautiful veined marble flooring and walls with a freestanding sculptural bathtub, twin basins, bespoke vanity units and a walk-in shower. The penthouse is complete with Crestron lighting system, video entry and Banham security systems.

Russell Smithers, Co-Founder & CEO of REDD Real Estate (London) says: “This elegant Charles Street penthouse offers luxuriously appointed living space over two floors and a private rooftop terrace garden, located in the heart of Mayfair just off Berkeley Square. With a bespoke specification by renowned design house 1508 London the penthouse forms the crown of a grand mansion building whose heritage is linked to world renowned English potter Josiah Wedgwood.
