Project manager Charlie Johnson joined REDD earlier this year, having studied Construction Project Management at university and gained experience working for developers and main contractors in central London.
Charlie shares an insight into his role at REDD, his background in real estate development, and his top tips for dining and socialising in London.
1. What was your background prior to joining REDD?
I studied Construction Project Management at Oxford Brookes. While studying, I was a site manager for a high-end residential project in Chelsea.
Once I graduated, I worked for a residential main contractor in Clapham as a project manager. Next, I moved to a developer and main contractor based in Chelsea and worked on projects in Belgravia, Chelsea, Knightsbridge and Mayfair.
2. What is your role at REDD and what does a typical working day look like?
Day to day, working as a project manager is varied, with tasks across all the RIBA stages. However, since I joined REDD I’ve been working in stages 3–5 [spatial coordination, technical design, and manufacturing and construction].
My usual tasks involve reviewing budgets and timelines, design, planning, contractual agreements, and having team meetings with consultants to drive the projects forward.
3. What motivated you to pursue a career in property?
When I was younger, I was initially drawn to the physical idea of building a project. As I got older the financing interested me. I felt if I could gain a substantial understanding of both I would be in a position to succeed.
4. If you had to give one piece of advice to someone beginning a career in real estate, what would it be?
The sheer amount of knowledge and information at times can be overwhelming, but it will come with time. Stick at it and build your own knowledge and skillset. Perhaps specialise in an area.
5. Which REDD project are you most looking forward to seeing completed?
As I’m managing 6 Charles Street I would have to say that. I find you start to care for a project, and you want to deliver it to the best of your ability where all stakeholders are happy with the outcome.
6. What is your favourite part of your role at REDD?
Firstly, the project and potential project. I love a unique residential scheme in central London, but also the fact that there is some variety. Secondly, the team in the office is a great unit. Everyone brings something to the table.
7. What’s your top tip for someone visiting London for the first time?
Start at The Grenadier and let the adventure begin!
8. What’s your favourite London restaurant?
Cecconi's in Mayfair.
9. How would you spend an ideal weekend?
At this time of year, I’d go to The Old Pack Horse in Chiswick on Friday night for Thai food. On Saturday I’d watch the Six Nations with friends, and on Sunday I’d relax – maybe have a roast.
10. What item could you not live without?
A car or motorbike.
