In the inaugural instalment of "Graduate Diaries," we’re pleased to meet Alex Chalton, REDD’s Junior Project Manager. Join us as Alex shares his journey from University graduate to his first role at REDD, offering insights into his daily responsibilities, the challenges he faces, and his aspirations for the future.
- What was your degree at University, and how did it prepare you for your role at REDD?
I earned a BSc (HONS) in Real Estate from Oxford Brookes University. The course provided a comprehensive overview of the real estate industry, including management and surveying. I especially enjoyed the management-focused modules, which inspired me to pursue a career in that direction.
- What motivated you to pursue a career in property development and management?
Development has always been of interest to me. I make an effort to keep close tabs on the property market and really enjoy seeing the process of developments transformed into homes. It also helps that I am known as a keen negotiator amongst family and friends!
- How did you secure your position as a Junior Project Manager at REDD?
After completing my studies in Real Estate at university and taking a year off to travel, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the industry and work in London. I consulted my career adviser, who informed me about a Junior Project Manager position that REDD had advertised on my university's job board. I applied for the role, went through a series of interviews, and was fortunate enough to secure the job.
- What are your primary responsibilities as a Junior Project Manager at REDD?
As a Junior Project Manager at REDD, my main responsibilities revolve around The Osborn project. I help manage contractors, handle snagging works, and maintain relations with clients, agents, and external stakeholders. This project involves the sale of 14 residential apartments and 1 commercial unit in the heart of Spitalfields.
In addition to this, I assist my colleagues with various ad hoc tasks and gain experience by shadowing project managers on projects such as One Palace Green and 6 Charles Street.
- Was there anything you were particularly nervous about before starting your role at REDD?
Before starting my role at REDD, I felt the usual nerves that come with a new job, especially about meeting the team and fitting in. However, I was quickly made to feel welcome by everyone, and I soon realised there was nothing to worry about. Being in the office every day has certainly helped, as I've been able to meet the team in person and ask questions as they come up.
Quick fire questions:
- Best bar for drinks after work near the office?
The Burlington Arms, it's brilliant and it's a stone's throw away. We are very lucky!
- Lime bike or Santander bike?
Lime bike for sure!
- 3 Countries on your travel bucket list?
Definitely Australia, Vietnam and Morocco. I would love to explore more outside of Europe.
- Do you have any hobbies outside of work that help you unwind after a busy day?
Tennis or golf on a summer evening, you can’t go wrong!
